Name/TitleBook: A Manual for the Practice of Surgery - Volumes 1 & 2
About this objectThese books were owned by Mr John Wood, who was the Surgical Mechanic and Custodian of Surgical stores at the Adelaide Hospital from 1888-1926. His signature is written in ink on the first page. Mr Wood designed the operating table (AR#2818) and can be seen in photograph (AR#629.16). His son Harold, who was first his assistant and then his successor, was also employed at the Hospital for many decades of service. In the days when the Woods worked in the operating theatre, it was customary for students to be expected to know quite a good deal about the names of surgical instruments and their uses. For a small fee the Woods tutored the students in this area.
